Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Kati Stauffer, teacher at Park Middle School.

But when I was with Stauffer, she made me understand everything I was learning. In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.

I teach sixth grade math and eighth grade yearbook at Park Middle School. I also help with cross country, Student Council, The Backpack Program and boys basketball. 

How long have you worked for LPS?

This is year 14. 

What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?

LPS has been a home for me ever since I was in first grade. I had a great experience as a student and when I was looking for a teaching job, there was nowhere else I wanted to be. 

What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?

I have fun at my job every day. The most rewarding part is building a positive classroom community for my students to grow in. 

In one word, what makes you proud to work for LPS?

All-means-all (it totally counts as one word if you hyphenate it, right?)

Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?

Yes, Southwest High School, Scott Middle School, and Cavett Elementary School.

What path did you take after completing your formal education?

My bachelor's degree is from the University of South Dakota. After that, I received a grant to pursue a master's degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. I began my career in elementary school, but I can't imagine being anywhere other than middle school. 

What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?

First and foremost, my family and closest friends are here. But in a more general sense, I love that it's constantly growing. It's diverse, inclusive, safe and feels like home. 

What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?

“Matilda.” A lot of credit goes to Miss Honey. That character is part of the reason I wanted to teach. 

Share a shoutout to a former teacher who impacted your life.

Mr. Danley, poor guy, had me for two years in a row and learning was so fun in those two years.
