Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Anthony Barnas, custodian at Lefler Middle School.

How long have you worked for LPS?
I started in September 2019, almost seven years.
What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
My dad was a custodian at Mickle Middle School and he suggested I apply. The benefits are a nice plus as well.
What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
The friendships I have made throughout the years with co-workers of mine. Also, the times I get to joke with the kids and get a laugh out of them.
In one word, what makes you proud to work for LPS?
Community.
Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
Yes. Pershing Elementary, Mickle Middle and Northeast High (Go Rockets!)
What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I attended Southeast Community College (SCC-Lincoln) after high school and eventually earned my associate degree in computer network engineering in 2020. I was working at LPS at the time as a custodian, but I enjoyed the physical aspect of the work, so I decided to stick with it.
What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
The Lincoln community is full of kind and generous residents. Having visited many larger cities around the U.S., I’ve found that Lincoln has a strong sense of hospitality.
What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
The Percy Jackson series. It was a book series that I would go to just to unwind and forget about everything for just a little bit. Who doesn't want to be able to breathe underwater and control it, right??
Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
My woodshop and small engines teacher, Mr. Schoening, at Northeast High School. He was one of those old-school teachers who knew how to joke around and make the classroom a fun and safe environment, but wouldn’t hold back when we got rowdy.
