Guidelines for Handling Used Materials

These guidelines define the processes for collection, storage, and disposal of used materials generated in the daily operations of delivering instruction and/or maintenance of facilities.

Definition of "Used Materials"

Material(s) for which no use or reuse is intended and which is to be discarded. These materials may or may not be hazardous--(causing an increase in mortality and serious or incapacitating illness).

Used materials referred to in these guidelines include, but are not limited to the following:

Automotive

Used motor oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, anti-freeze, power steering fluid, hydraulic fluid, carburetor cleaning fluid, engine parts, cleaning solvent, lead acid batteries, stale gasoline, petroleum distillates, discarded tires, and oil filters

Paint/Wood Finishes

Paint, stains, varnishes, lacquer, thinners, solvents, wood preserving agents, kerosene

Graphic Arts Materials

Ink and/or ink sludge containing chromium or lead, solvents, thinners, cleaning fluids

Guidelines for Disposal of Used Materials:

1. Used materials will be stored in separate containers appropriately marked to indicate the contents of the container. USED MATERIAL WILL NOT BE COMMINGLED.

2. Used materials must be stored in containers approved by the Director of Maintenance, CMF or his/her designee.

Containers used to store materials must be clearly marked with approved labels. All containers must be secured.

3. All used materials will be disposed of under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance, CMF or his/hedesignee. NO EMPLOYEE SHALL DISPOSE OF USED MATERIALS WITHOUT THE APPROVAL OF THE DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE, CMF.

ITE labs needing used materials disposed of must contact the ITE office at 436-1821. Contact must be initiated by the department chair or middle level contact person.

4.When ITE labs need used materials disposal, the department chair or middle level contact person will contact the ITE office at 436-1821. Anthony Meints, LPS Environmental Specialist, will then visit the lab to coordinate the pick-up of the used material.

Arrangements should be made to have the following used materials picked up when their containers are approximately 75% full.

  • Antifreeze (30 gallon barrels, locked and properly labeled)
  • Mineral spirits is the prescribed thinner for use with paints ands wood finishes. (5 gallon barrels, properly labeled)
  • Used oil (50 gallon barrels, properly labeled)
  • Oil filters (50 gallon barrels, properly labeled)

Arrangements should be made to have the following used materials picked up and refilled based on the judgment of the instructor. Again, the department chair or middle level contact person will contact the ITE office at 436-1821 and Anthony Meints will visit the lab and coordinate the pick up.

  • Carburetor cleaner (only used in senior high)
  • Engine parts washer

Used materials should not be held in storage a building or maintenance shop sites longer than 180 days and quantities of each used material should be limited to:

  • Thinner/Solvents, Paints, Stains, Varnish, etc. - 10 Gallons
  • Used Oil - 50 Gallons
  • Antifreeze - 25 Gallons

Employees will consider the disposal of used materials when ordering supplies to ensure that materials purchased and used can be disposed of safely, efficiently and effectively.

5. Tires will not be left in automotive labs. All discarded tires must leave the lab with the vehicle.

6. All ITE staff and students should be knowledgeable related to materials used in the ITE classrooms and labs. Staff should review MSDS sheets on all potentially hazardous materials and keep those sheets in a place where quick access is possible. Staff must teach students about proper selection, storage, use and disposal of materials. All ITE staff and students must act in a responsible and accountable manner as good stewards of the environment.
