New student enrollment record highlighted by city-wide growth

Student enrollment at Lincoln Public Schools hit historic, record highs this school year with 39,948 students attending the school district, 882 more than last year - a 2.3 percent increase over one year ago and a 9.5 percent increase over the past five years.

The significant growth means that two LPS high schools now have enrollments over 2,000, two middle schools have enrollments over 1,000, two elementary schools have enrollments over 800 and five more elementaries have enrollments over 700.

"These are amazing numbers as we see dramatic growth in our student enrollment throughout the entire community and school district - at our newer schools and our older schools, at schools in all areas of Lincoln,” said Steve Joel, superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools. “I believe this is the result of being part of a dynamic and progressive city where families want to live and raise their children - and where they want to see their kids go to school.”

The official student enrollment count for LPS is recorded each year on the final Friday of September when numbers are reported to the State Department of Education.

This year, 2,196 students are attending Lincoln North Star High School (an increase of 7 percent over the last year, 15.5 percent over the last five years), and 2,100 go to Lincoln Southeast High School. The 1,168 LPS high school students added to the school district over the last 5 years - would by themselves be the 21st largest high school in the state.

The LPS middle schools with the highest enrollments this year are: Lux Middle School and Scott Middle School - both with 1,079 students this year - followed by Park Middle School, 871; and Pound, 867. Culler Middle School has 697 students this year, which represents an 8 percent increase over last year - and a 43 percent increase over the past five years.

Elementary schools with the most students are: Roper Elementary School with 839 students; Adams Elementary School, 816; Arnold Elementary, 784; Kooser Elementary, 754; Campbell Elementary, 710; Cavett Elementary, 706; and Belmont Elementary, 705.

“We have now seen this kind of continued, significant growth over the past five years, and our challenge - and opportunity - is to continue ensuring the highest quality educational experience for all students as they move forward to college and careers,” Joel said. “We are incredibly fortunate to have a supportive community that not only has high expectations for academic achievement, but that is also willing to assist with our work."
