Staff Spotlight: Austin Oltman - music teacher at Goodrich Middle School

January 30, 2026

Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Austin Oltman, music teacher at Goodrich Middle School.

“Austin is truly inspirational in the sense that he teaches at a high level, pushes himself to keep growing as a teacher, and is an amazing team member on the music staff and overall teaching staff at Goodrich.” - Zach Braxton, Goodrich instrumental music teacher

In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.
For the last six years, I have proudly served Goodrich Middle School as the vocal music teacher, teaching sixth and seventh grade vocal music as well as eighth grade guitar. As the School Improvement Plan (SIP) co-chair for Goodrich, I enjoy working with colleagues from schools around the district to continue to prioritize student achievement.

What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
Music has always been my passion. Ever since I can remember, I have been either singing or playing an instrument. Growing up in a home where education was a top priority, both of my parents' hard work as educators inspired me to pursue the career.

What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
Serving in a school with a rich and diverse culture, I have had the privilege to witness student achievement in a variety of ways that keep me invested as an educator.

Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I attended Maxey Elementary, Lux Middle School and Lincoln East High School.

What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and earned a bachelor’s degree in music education.

What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
I enjoy getting to teach in the city and district I grew up and went to school in. I get to give back to the community that helped shape me.

What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
Rather than name one book, I remember growing up with an emphasis on early literacy. My parents read to me at an early age and encouraged me to read often.

Share a shout out to a former teacher  who impacted your life.
Tom Thorpe is the band teacher at Lincoln East High School. He was an important mentor to me in high school and fostered my love for music. I would not be where I am without his support and encouragement.
