Staff Spotlight: Chris Steininger - social worker for the Early Childhood Department
October 24, 2025
Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Chris Steininger, social worker for the Early Childhood Department.
“Chris goes above and beyond to help support the teachers and the families we serve. I have reached out to him multiple times needing resources for my families, and he responds in a timely manner and talks to me to get more information on the family and their needs. He has offered to go on home visits with me. He has visited the classroom and the students I have talked to him about. He has provided multiple resources that have been helpful for families. He is just a great asset to the early childhood field, and he really cares about supporting the preschool teachers, students and families.” - Joy Hesse, early childhood family educator at Hartley Elementary School.
In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.
I am a school social worker for the Early Childhood Department, specifically preschool. I travel to every preschool classroom throughout the district and offer classroom support that aligns with the designated curriculum. I also am available to families to offer community resources and connect them to appropriate supports.
How long have you worked for LPS?
This is my second year.
What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
Being from the Chicago area, all I ever knew was how districts were in Illinois. My wife is from Lincoln, and she raved about what a great district LPS is. I couldn't wait to become a part of a district that cares about their students and families, and provides so many opportunities for growth for their staff.
What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
I love being able to travel all around the city and work with different preschool staff. It is so fun to learn about the different communities within our city. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the growth in students throughout the school year.
Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I am from Bartlett, Illinois.
What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for both my bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in social work. My wife and I then moved to Evanston, Ill., where I was a school social worker for two years at Mount Prospect District 57.
What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
"Nebraska Nice" is real! I love how the community all comes together to support one another even though Lincoln is constantly growing.
What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
A book that has influenced my life positively is "Anything" by Clive Custler. He manages to tell stories from a different perspective and meshes it all together to create a grasping story.
Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
My first grade teacher, Mrs. Schwartz! She taught me how to show compassion and kindness to others.
