July 11, 2025
Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Leah Bracht, special education teacher and summer school coordinator at West Lincoln Elementary School.
“She has done an amazing job with summer school. She is willing to take on extra tasks and is always positive when faced with adversity. She is very dedicated to our community.” - Scott Schwartz, West Lincoln Elementary School principal.
In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.
I am a special education teacher at West Lincoln Elementary. I provide individualized support for students.
As the summer school coordinator, I work with teachers and families to invite and get students signed up for summer school. I order and organize instructional materials and create a schedule for summer school. I also create systems that help support students and teachers during summer as well as respond to various needs throughout the day. I also serve and supervise breakfast and lunch.
How long have you worked for LPS?
This fall I will be starting my sixth year working for LPS.
What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
I wanted to be a teacher from an early age. My mom was a para at my elementary school, so I spent a lot of time while she was there during the year and summers helping teachers. When I came to Lincoln for college and had my first practicum, I liked being a part of LPS. Each school is their own community within Lincoln and it's great to have the opportunity to be another positive influence in our students' lives.
What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
One of my favorite parts of working here is the relationships with both staff and students. It’s really rewarding to see the little moments of growth.
Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I am from West Point, Neb.
What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I attended Nebraska Wesleyan and graduated with elementary and special education degrees. I finished my masters in educational administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln last year.
What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
It’s a big city, but still feels like a small town.
What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
I enjoyed reading the Magic Treehouse series when I was growing up.
Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
A teacher who had a positive impact on me was Dr. Martin at Nebraska Wesleyan.
