June 20, 2025
Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Elizabeth Tenney, English teacher and liaison at Scott Middle School.
“Ms. Tenney is a remarkable educator who exemplifies dedication, passion, and a tireless commitment to her students’ success. She goes above and beyond to ensure that every student grows academically, socially and emotionally, no matter the effort it takes. Her students are at the heart of everything she does, and her unwavering belief in their potential inspires them to achieve their best.
“As a team leader, Ms. Tenney is a strong advocate for both students and staff. Her leadership fosters a positive culture and ensures that students and teachers alike feel supported.
“She designs engaging and thought-provoking activities that challenge students to think critically and participate actively. One standout example is her lesson centered on “The Outsiders,” where students hold a trial, dress in character, and immerse themselves in a hands-on learning experience. Lessons like this not only bring content to life but also create lasting memories and instill a love of learning in her students.” - Jesse Tvrdy, Scott Middle School principal
In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.
I teach seventh grade English and eighth grade AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). I also serve as a team leader and English liaison for my building.
How long have you worked for LPS?
This upcoming school year will mark my 13th year as a Scott Star.
What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
To me, teaching has always been more than a career—it's a calling. I decided I wanted to teach as a little girl and spent my entire childhood teaching imaginary students in my basement classroom. I never saw myself doing anything else. As a proud product of LPS, I knew I wanted to give back to the district and community that have given so much to me. The past 12 years have truly felt like a dream come true.
What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
The best part of working for LPS has been the relationships I’ve built with my colleagues and students. I’m proud to work for a district full of amazing educators who want the best for all students. I love watching my students develop as strong leaders and critical thinkers each year. They make me smile and they make me proud every single day. Middle schoolers are also hilarious - my job is never boring!
Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I attended Pyrtle Elementary School, Lux Middle School and East High School. LPS has been a monumental part of my life.
What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I received my bachelor’s degree in secondary English education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I was lucky enough to student teach at Scott, and there happened to be an opening here the next fall. I have never left! I obtained my master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Doane University shortly after beginning my career.
What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
Lincoln is a big small town at heart. It is rare to go a day without running into someone you know. I feel grateful to be part of such a caring, tight-knit community that values our public schools. And as an avid Husker football fan, nothing beats a fall Saturday in Lincoln!
What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
A childhood book that comes to mind is "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein, which portrays the power of giving and caring for others. As an educator, the book that has most impacted me is "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. Year after year, I watch this book help students fall more in love with reading. It’s always a highlight of seventh grade English, and experiencing it alongside my students is pure magic.
Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
I enjoyed so many of my LPS teachers, but I would not be the educator I am today without Jen Van Winkle, my eighth grade English teacher. Jen knew about my desire to become a teacher and allowed me to help out in her classroom after school. I know now that this time was less about needing my help and more about building a strong relationship with me. I’ve always looked up to Jen, and I love that we now get to serve together as English liaisons.
