May 15, 2025
Every week, we’ll shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! Get to know the wonderful people making a positive impact across various areas within LPS. This week, meet Alyssa Tonniges, seventh grade science teacher at Schoo Middle School.
“Alyssa came to Schoo for a science opening and has transitioned into the team as if she has been here forever. She really was a saving grace last year, and we are so thankful she came to our team. She makes connections with our students who struggle and builds them up to show them the person they can be with hard work and determination. Alyssa really is an asset to Schoo and Lincoln Public Schools.” - Stephanie Taylor, special education teacher at Schoo Middle School.
How long have you worked for LPS?
I am a first-year teacher. However, I did student teach at Schoo Middle School and Pershing Elementary.
What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
During my practicums at LPS, I quickly noticed the strong sense of support and community within each school. It was also during my student teaching at LPS that I discovered my passion for teaching.
What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
My favorite part of working at Schoo is building relationships with both students and teachers. I've felt strong support from the veteran teachers around me, and their encouragement has motivated me to keep growing.
Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I grew up in Omaha and graduated from Westside High School.
What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I earned my bachelor's degree from Doane University and am currently working toward my master's degree there as well.
What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
What I love most about Lincoln is that it offers a welcoming, small-town atmosphere while still providing the conveniences of a larger city.
What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
Growing up, I loved reading the “Magic Treehouse” series. It sparked a passion for reading that I still carry with me today.
Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
Mr. Koch, one of my high school math teachers at Westside High School, created an environment in his classroom that made me truly enjoy math. Whenever I needed extra help, he always took the time to work with me during his planning period and was incredibly patient.
