Community invited to Lincoln Standing Bear High School dedication ceremony Sept. 29

Lincoln Public Schools invites the community to a special dedication ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 29, starting at 1 p.m. at Lincoln Standing Bear High School.

The dedication ceremony will include performances by the Ponca Drum Group, student musicians, remarks by Ponca Chairwoman Candace Schmidt, and recognition of Chief Standing Bear’s descendants. Tours of the school will be available after the ceremony.

LPS hopes the community will join in the dedication of the newest high school and honor the legacy of Chief Standing Bear.

Standing Bear (1829-1908) was a chief of the Ponca Tribe when the tribe was forcibly removed from its homeland in Nebraska. When Standing Bear returned to Nebraska to bury his son, he was arrested and held for trial. Standing Bear prevailed and was declared a "person" according to law. He and his followers were free to return to their homeland. However, they had no home to return to, as all of the tribe’s land had been taken from them.
