Cavett students help fill school library shelves with new areas of interest

Cavett Elementary students can now enjoy new literature thanks to their peers.
The school received federal COVID-19 relief funds to purchase new books. Cavett’s librarian, Heidi Clarke, felt it was only right that the students provided feedback.
“I made sure that I ordered books that students want to read. I got their input and other school librarians' input as well. This inspired me to get new and diverse titles and update old favorites,” Clarke said.
More than 2,000 titles were added to Cavett’s library. Cardinals from all grade levels will be able to dive deep into various interests ranging from historical female figures and sports. Fifth-grade student Kylan was one of the students who provided Clarke feedback. He suggested the Who Was series which made it into the school’s updated collection.
“I chose Who Was books because there's multiple different people you can learn about,” Kylan said.
Fourth-grade student Agatha also gave some ideas about what titles should be included. Her recommendation When Ruth Bader Ginsburg Chewed 100 Sticks of Gum is now on bookshelves. She was happy to be included in the selection process.
“It made me feel good as someone that understood that I really wanted other people to learn about these women,” Agatha added.
Students have been praising the new books in their library – making it easier for educators to share the joy of reading.
“School librarians know that updating and buying new books gets kids' attention. It’s like putting out decorations for the next holiday. It makes the space feel new and exciting,” Clarke said.
Don’t forget several of our libraries are open during the summer through the end of June. Connect with your school to learn more.
