Lincoln High’s Renee Jones named Nebraska 2023 Teacher of the Year

The legacy of excellence in education continues at Lincoln High with another one of its educators earning a prestigious state honor.

The Nebraska Department of Education recognized Renee Jones as its 2023 Nebraska Teacher of the Year. Nebraska Commissioner of Education Matthew Blomstedt surprised Jones during her first-period class presenting the award along with Lincoln Public Schools leadership.

“I think it’s an honor that somebody would entrust me to represent the people of Nebraska and teachers,” Jones said.

A panel of state educators selected Jones for the award. The Teacher of the Year program recognizes the contributions of classroom teachers who are exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, skilled and who have the ability to inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn. Her students appreciate her individualized approach to teaching and her ability to foster bonds with them.

“I was surprised by the amount of people that came in, but I am not surprised she was nominated. She’s a really good teacher,” said Parker, a ninth grade student.

“Mrs. Jones is a nice teacher and she helps me grow as a person, as a freshman,” added classmate DeAdrian.

Both students are a part of Jones’ first-period Oral Communications class.

Jones has taught for eight years. She has spent the past two years at Lincoln High. Jones started her career working at a youth residential treatment center before transitioning to education. Jones said relationships and connecting with kids are fundamental to her teaching philosophy.

“I always want to make sure that my students feel like I care about them and that they feel comfortable in the room,” Jones said.

“In her short time at LHS, Mrs. Jones has built great relationships with her students and also intentionally plans lessons that engage students in deep learning,” said Mark Larson, principal.  “Her passion for teaching and connection makes her a great fit at Lincoln High and deserving of this award. We are so proud of her and know that she will represent our school, our state, and our profession very well in this capacity.”

Nine LPS educators have been named Nebraska Teacher of the Year. Jones now joins the ranks of Lincoln High teachers who have received the honor including Sydney Jensen (2019), Amber Vlasnik (2017) and Patsy Koch Johns (2006). Koch Johns is the current president of the Nebraska State Board of Education. She also was a part of the surprise presentation in Jones’ classroom.

Jones will be honored by the Nebraska State Board of Education at a future event. She will also be eligible to compete in the National Teacher of the Year competition later this year.
