New Educator Spotlight: Jon Marquez

Every week, we will be featuring one of our new LPS educators to get to know a little more about them and why they chose to be an educator. This week's New Educator Spotlight is Jon Marquez, Director of Choirs and Theatre at Lincoln Northwest High School.

Building/Department: Lincoln Northwest/Fine Arts Department

Teaching Assignment/Role: Director of Choirs & Director of Theatre

Why did you want to become an educator?
When I was in high school, I looked forward to band, choir and theatre every single day. I felt a strong sense of belonging and couldn't wait to go to the fine arts hallway. I always felt like my choir, band and theatre directors cared so much about the students and the performances we were getting ready for. I knew that when I grew up, I wanted to be just like them!

What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools?
We have a fantastic group of dedicated students who have really taken to our Musical Theatre program at Lincoln Northwest. It has been incredible to build and foster an inclusive culture in our Performing Arts Department. We have so many students who are participating in the arts for the first time, and it is inspiring to see them fall in love with what they are doing.

Where did you attend college?
Chadron State College & University of Nebraska - Lincoln

What is your favorite part of being an educator?
Watching my students succeed and knowing that I made a difference on their life.

Describe a time that you knew you made a difference for a student or group of students.
This year at LNW I have been bringing a couple dozen donuts to the choir room. Every Friday the first few visitors get a donut. Never underestimate the power of a donut! So many students have decided to join choir and participate in something new for one reason, someone invited them to! I feel like I make a difference when I am greeting the students with a simple smile and a loud "It's a great day to be a Falcon!". It's the little things we do to help a student feel welcomed in a school they should love.

What is a fun fact about you?
I love everything to do with French culture. I have been to France twice and hope to return for a third time this summer!
