Highlights of 4/13 Board of Education Regular Meeting

The Lincoln Board of Education met for a regular meeting on Tuesday, April 13, at the Lincoln Public Schools District Office, 5905 O St.

Staff Celebration

The Board recognized two staff members with formal resolutions for awards they recently earned. Director of Student Services Russ Uhing and Supervisor of Counseling and School Social Work Brenda Leggiadro were honored with the Friend of School Social Work award from the School Social Work Association of Nebraska.

Presentation

LPS Director of Strategic Initiatives and Focus Programs James Blake and Bryan Seck from the Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development and Prosper Lincoln presented on the Lincoln STEM Ecosystem (LNKSE) initiative and its progress since it began in 2019.

In 2019, Lincoln was selected to join the STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice. Lincoln already has a wide variety of amazing opportunities for students and families. The goal of the ecosystem is to increase equity and access to experiences that connect in and out of school learning to the real world and could lead to STEM careers.

2020 LPS Pandemic Plan & Procedures Update

Superintendent Steve Joel gave an update that staff continue to collaborate with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department. They are working on ways to provide vaccination opportunities soon to high school students when doses become available.

First Reading

New northeast elementary school construction

Bids were requested from interested vendors for the construction of the new northeast elementary school.

There were four bids submitted. It was recommended the project be awarded to the lowest bidder meeting specifications, which was Kingery Construction Co. of Lincoln for $20,163,000.

The Board waived second reading and voted to approve the bid. This will be paid for through the 2020 Bond Fund.

Second Reading

Newly annexed property to the City of Lincoln

The City of Lincoln has annexed a parcel of land, which automatically brings this property into the district of Lincoln Public Schools. This property needs to be assigned attendance centers so potential purchasers of homes in this area will know which schools they will be attending. The annexed parcel of land is Camping World Lincoln, Annexation Ordinance #21028, for the 2020-21 school year and its assigned schools are Norwood Park Elementary School, Dawes Middle School and Northeast High School.

The Board voted to approve the attendance centers.

Bond Fund Project Bids

The Board voted to approve numerous construction project bids for the two new high school sites. All of the bids were either the lowest in cost or the only bid submitted. The projects are being paid for through the Bond Fund, approved by voters in February 2020.
