'Backstage at the Ballet' visits Lakeview Elementary

Each year, one Lincoln Public Schools elementary school is chosen to participate in "Backstage at the Ballet," an artist-in-residency program through the Midwest Ballet Company. This year, the ballet company visited Lakeview Elementary School Dec. 3-6. Students rotated through three stations - choreography, makeup and costuming - during specials time. The week culminated in an abbreviated performance of the "Nutcracker Ballet" on Dec. 6 in the Lakeview gym. The performance included several Lakeview students.

Although reluctant at first, third-grader Dannya was all smiles after she had her face painted by the company's professional makeup artist.

"It was a really fun day and I got a great privilege of getting to paint my face, so that's why I changed my mind because I thought to myself, maybe I'll never get to do this in my life ever again, so I'll try it," she said.

Lakeview music teacher Anna Claridge helped organize the visit and said the students were "absolutely ecstatic."

"We feel honored that we were chosen to do this because it's a really big deal," she said.
