From Olympians to Dragons, Goodrich celebrates 50th anniversary

Goodrich Middle School is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and to commemorate the milestone, the school’s theme is “Success always leaves footprints,” a quote from Booker T. Washington.

Plenty of people who left their mark on Goodrich turned out on Sunday afternoon for a two-hour open house at the school. The event attracted alumni from the school’s early years, former teachers and administrators, as well as current students and families. The Goodrich band, choir and step team performed. Current students led former students on tours of the school - much of which wasn’t there when they attended.

“It was wonderful. I was very pleased with the turnout,” said Principal Kelly Schrad. “I think a lot of people still live in the neighborhood, so it was a nice neighborhood event, as well.”

History teacher Kent Swanson has been at Goodrich for 45 years. He was hired by the school’s original principal, Lyle Bargman. On Sunday, Swanson sported a hat that read, “From Olympians to Dragons,” in reference to the school’s former and current mascots.

Swanson, whose granddaughter attends Goodrich, said it was special to see so many former students return to the school to celebrate the anniversary.

“It’s great because they have good memories,” he said, “and they always appreciate some of the things I did, which makes you feel good.”
