Celebrating Community Learning Centers

It’s 3:45 on a recent afternoon at the Calvert Community Learning Center and, as usual, it’s buzzing with activities for the 130 elementary school students attending the CLC’s free afterschool programming.

In one room, volunteer college students help with homework. The writing club is meeting down the hallway. In another room, members of the girls STEM club are huddled around a table. And outside, pint-size players learn the basics of tennis.

“We really strive to be an extension of the school day,” said Emily Trauernicht, the Calvert CLC coordinator.

Calvert is one of 26 CLCs, located at 19 elementary schools, six middle schools and one high school. They offer a variety of afterschool programming and resources through partnerships with 12 lead agencies and hundreds of community partners.

This Thursday, Oct. 26, the CLCs are celebrating “Lights on Afterschool,” a national day of recognition for afterschool programs. The CLC at Park Middle School will host “Come Kick It with the CLCs” from 5:30-7 p.m. The event will include basketball and soccer, free dinner, free t-shirts and presentations by all 26 CLC sites highlighting their programs.

Trauernicht said this week is a great opportunity to spread the word about the services and resources they offer - and not only for the students they serve 3-6 p.m. on school days.

“The CLC strategy is encompassed by being active in the community. We focus on our students, their families and the neighborhoods they live in,” Trauernicht said. “By fostering strong partnerships we’re able to use the strengths of the community to provide family engagement opportunities, promote health and wellness, create safe spaces, and provide many other supports.”

The Lincoln Community Foundation, the City of Lincoln and Lincoln Public Schools share oversight of the CLCs. Together, they strive toward a shared goal: Smart students, thriving families and strong neighborhoods.
