The official groundbreaking ceremony for new projects at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo highlighted coming animal attractions, a family-friendly environment, and enriched learning opportunities for visitors and students alike.
Part of the new facilities includes new classrooms for the Science Focus Program.
Affectionately known as Zoo School, a focus program of Lincoln Public Schools, it provides an education emphasizing Science in all aspects of a challenging curriculum for students from any high school.
Don Mayhew, LPS Board president, represented LPS as a speaker at the event.
“Our elementary children routinely visit the zoo each year as one of the most favored field trips,” he said. “Many of our teachers spend part of their summers teaching Children’s Zoo classes. And back in 1997, the Lincoln Children’s Zoo became the setting for the very first LPS high school focus program: The Science Focus Program – better known as Zoo School.”
The Zoo School was the first LPS focus program and started in 1997. The new building will allow the student population to double, and provide more academic opportunities for those students and teachers.
Mayhew said LPS and the Zoo are perfect as partners.
“We are two organizations that represent a perfect mesh of mission, both centered on education and creating a better future for Lincoln…and this rich, collaborative partnership only broadens our vision,” Mayhew said.
