Sustainability Spotlight: East Horticulture Club

Every Friday, a group of Lincoln East students grab their watering cans and roll up their sleeves for Horticulture Club. Bryan Penas, Lincoln East Science teacher, began the horticulture club for students interested in plants two years ago. Since then, the club has become a place for students of all grades to relax, connect with each other, and most importantly, learn about plants [more].

Pumpkin Collection November 6th

Green your Halloween by composting your pumpkins instead of throwing them away! Waste to Energy Lincoln, Uribe Refuse Services and Soil Dynamics is hosting a pumpkin collection site so community members can drop of their pumpkins to be composted instead of having to send them to the landfill. The event will be held at the Seacrest Field parking lot, 7300 A St., on Saturday November 6th from 12pm-2pm.

School Garden Gathering November 11th

LPS Sustainability and Beyond School Bells have collaborated to host our second quarter garden gathering, which will be focused on garden engagement through the winter. The event will be hosted at The Bay on November 11th and has two sessions available to accommodate CLC staff, school staff, and other volunteers that want to attend. The gathering will include a tour of the Freight Farm, information about tower gardens, and other winter gardening activities. Register for the event HERE.

Scrap Metal Drive to support LPS Recycling

November 15th is America Recycles Day, a nationally recognized opportunity to promote proper recycling and bring awareness to the recycling opportunities in our community. Lincoln Public Schools is celebrating by kicking off our annual Scrap Metal Drive, which will run from America Recycles Day, November 15th, 2021 to Earth Day, April 22nd, 2022.

Partnering locations for the Scrap Metal Drive include Alter Metal Recycling and Sadoff Iron and Metal Company. All types of scrap metal will be accepted, including aluminum and tin cans, pots and pans, appliances, wiring, sinks, bathtubs and electric motors. Recycling revenue can be donated to the Lincoln Public Schools Recycling Program, and those funds are used to replace rusted out steel recycling containers. The old containers will be recycled as scrap metal and replaced with new containers manufactured from recycled steel – closing the recycling loop.
