LPS Earth Day – celebrate all week long

Earth Day is coming up on Wednesday, April 22, and this year marks the 50th anniversary! This is a day for us to recognize the importance of environmental protection and appreciate all the wonderful experiences and resources provided by nature. Arbor Day is the same week, on Friday, April 24. This holiday is all about planting trees and supporting the many benefits they provide.

With so much to celebrate, why not keep it going all week long? LPS Sustainability has gathered a list of activities and resources for our students and their families to explore safely at home. Help us celebrate together by sharing your photos using #LPSearthday. Read more here.

Green Schools Virtual Gathering – TODAY!

The USGBC Nebraska Green Schools Committee will be hosting another Green Schools Virtual Gathering on Thursday, April 16, at 12 pm CDT.

Join us for a virtual gathering of green schools advocates across the state of Nebraska. We are all dealing with the challenges of remote working and learning and adapting for the remainder of the school year, including how to continue momentum on our green schools activities. This will be an open opportunity to connect with our fellow green schools supporters and discuss what we are experiencing and share suggestions. There will also be a collection of resources shared for adapting your sustainability activities and Earth Day celebrations for students and families at home.

Sustainability Spotlight: Southeast NEATure Club

This month’s Sustainability Spotlight goes to the Southeast High School NEATure Club! Students and staff at Southeast high school created the NEATure Club in order to explore sustainable opportunities and implement student ideas. Laurel Schmitz, science teacher at Southeast, took on the role as club sponsor and has been busy facilitating ideas and organizing activities for students in the club. On club days, the NEATure club often has a meeting, goes on nature walks, picks up litter in nearby neighborhoods or works on improving waste management in their school. [more]

Green Schools Recognition Program - Deadline May 1st

The Green School Recognition Program will be coming to a close on April 30th, so be sure to catch up on submitting your activities from the year. We also know that green schools activities during 4th quarter will look different from the rest of the year as our staff and families continue to adapt. Please still submit those activities for review, especially those Earth Day celebrations! Once submissions have closed, we will tally the results and recognize all of our schools that have participated in the program throughout the year.

Cans4Books Recycling Drive

April is National School Library Month, and that would normally mean it is time for another Cans4Books recycling drive. Unfortunately our drive had to be cancelled for this year, but in what would have been the 20th year of this program, we want to reflect on the amazing impact the drive has had over the years. Since 2001, Cans4Books drives have recycled 92,729 pounds of aluminum, which is over 3.1 million cans! And those efforts have put over $42,000 of books in our school libraries. Thank you to all of our schools and community members who continue to support this program each year – you are doing great work for our environment and our school libraries!

Scrap Metal Drive to Support LPS Recycling Program

Don’t forget, if you come across any scrap metal items to be recycled, they can go to Sadoff Iron and Metal Company or Alter Metal Recycling for our scrap metal drive. Read more about what types of materials are accepted and where to go HERE.
