Sustainability Spotlight: Tiffany Geis at Kloefkorn

This month’s sustainability spotlight is shining on Tiffany Geis at Kloefkorn Elementary School. She has been a first grade teacher at Kloefkorn for five years now, but this is her first time serving as the Sustainability Champion. “I took this role because I am interested in many of the facets of sustainability in our society. I thought it would be a great way to find new and creative ways to engage students, staff and families in creating a school that embraced this effort.” [more]

Hartley celebrates school-wide composting

Hartley Elementary has joined the list of LPS buildings that have school-wide composting collection! To celebrate this new setup for the start of 2023, Hartley invited the LPS Sustainability Team to provide grade level assemblies during the January PLC day.

Each grade learned more about which materials go into the recycling, composting, and landfill containers in their classroom and practiced their sorting skills with a waste relay. They also met some of the decomposer worms that are helping break down the organic waste from their school.

GSRP TIP: Hosting a sustainability themed PLC Day experience will earn 20 points through the Green Schools Recognition Program.

10th Annual Recycle Holiday Lights Drive Results

The results of the Eastridge Elementary 10th Annual Recycle Holiday Lights Drive are in! This year, the Lincoln Community recycled 10,044 pounds of holiday lights and raised $5,022!

Eastridge PTO, Lincoln FireFighters Operation Warm and the LPS Science Focus Program Booster Club will each receive $1,674 due to the recycling efforts.

Over the 10 years the event has been held, 101,124 pounds of holiday lights have been diverted from the landfill through Scrap Central Inc recycling, totaling $41,402.97 raised. This event is just one of many great examples of LPS schools raising money AND helping the planet!

2023 District Science Fair is March 2nd

The 26th Annual LPS Science Fair is coming up soon and student registration is now open! The Fair is March 2nd at 5 pm at the Lancaster Event Center and is open to all 5th through 8th grade LPS students. Students will have the opportunity to present their science project and check out the exhibit of community partners providing engaging and educational activities.

The LPS Sustainability Team will be there to distribute the ‘Green Ribbons' to any projects that explored a sustainability related topic!

Earth Day Planning

Earth Day is coming up on Saturday, April 22nd – has your school started planning yet? There are plenty of ways for schools to celebrate that day, week, or even all month long! We have Earth Day Bingo Cards available again and of course the Green Schools Recognition Program has a variety of other activities and resources for inspiration.

GSRP TIP: Planning an Earth Day Celebration earns 10 points through the Green Schools Recognition Program.

Tower Garden Harvest at Roper

A couple weeks ago, the 5th grade students at Roper Elementary were able to have their first harvest from the new tower garden in their library. After trimming and washing a variety of lettuces, students were then able to taste what they had grown and discuss the differences from foods they might get at the store.

Tower gardens are a great way for students to continue growing through the winter months, and about half of our buildings have them!

GSRP TIP: Starting up any type of garden (even an indoor one!) will earn 20 points for the Green Schools Recognition Program
