Sustainability Spotlight: Shawn Roberts at Park Middle School

Park Middle has been a sustainability leader in Lincoln Public Schools for years, and despite the obstacles of COVID-19, Shawn Roberts, Media Secretary and Sustainability Champion, is determined to keep sustainability as a focus. Although the pandemic makes it more difficult to meet with students and facilitate hands-on activities, Roberts celebrates the small ways her school is making a difference. Read more about how she is keeping Park engaged in sustainability [more].

LPS Operations Building joins Compost Program

The most recent addition to the LPS Compost Program is the Operations building! This brings the total number of participating buildings in the district up to 59. Organic material is being collected in the staff kitchenette and paper towels are being collected in restrooms and other handwashing areas. Whether it is expanding collection at an existing building or implementing the collection at a new building, we continue to look for more ways to divert waste from going to landfill.

Goodwill donation drives for Reuse and Recycling

Looking for a new sustainability project for your LPS Green Team? Host a donation drive with Lincoln Goodwill! You provide the passion; Goodwill provides the bins, event flyers, and trucks for pickup. With your help, we can work towards our goal of diverting 3 million pounds of materials from local landfills in 2021.

Recycling beyond the classroom: construction waste

Construction and demolition is starting on several 2020 Bond projects, which means our construction waste management guidelines are in use again. All LPS projects have an 80% waste diversion goal for waste produced on site. Many materials from our sites can be recycled including scrap wood, metal, brick & concrete, cardboard, and even ceiling tiles!

As with all waste sorting, clear signage is important. Thanks to funding from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, we were able to purchase magnetic signs for the rolls offs that identify the category in both English and Spanish and include images of accepted materials. These designs come from Recycle Across America, an organization dedicated to “society-wide standardized labeling system for recycling bins to make it easier for people to begin to recycle right”.
