Sustainability Spotlight: Sheri Christen at Maxey Elementary

This month’s Sustainability Spotlight recognizes Sheri Christen at Maxey Elementary! Learn about Maxey’s garden, the Maximizers, and more on our website.

Transportation Update - It’s Electric!

Keep an eye out for this new 100% electric Chevy Bolt EUV on the road with the LPS Sustainability Logo! Purchased in September, this is the very first electric vehicle to be added to the district fleet.

Did you know that LPS operates over 160 buses (yellow fleet) and nearly 160 white fleet vehicles? The district is excited to continue exploring ways to reduce vehicle emissions and contribute to a more sustainable transportation system. Visit our website to learn more about sustainable transportation at LPS.

Holiday Lights Recycling

Bring your working or non-working holiday lights, extension cords, and insulated wire to a collection site from November 15th through January 10th. For the full list of dropoff locations and more information, visit drive organizer Scrap Central’s website.

Garden Gathering Recap

At last month’s garden gathering, speakers from Roper Elementary shared their experiences with indoor growing systems, plus tips and tricks they’ve learned along the way. Attendees also learned about Roper’s vision for the future and enjoyed a harvest demonstration and salad tasting. Event slides are available here.

Congratulations to Norwood Park Elementary for winning the Lincoln Center Kiwanis Club’s Lettuce Grow Farmstand giveaway drawing!

Green Schools Recognition Program Reminders

  • Anyone can earn GSRP points: Students, teachers, staff, and families can all submit activities to earn points for their school.
  • You may already be doing points-earning activities: Participating in the Cans4Books Recycling Drive, taking class lessons outside, and supporting clothing donation drives are all ways to earn points.
  • LPS Sustainability will reward your efforts: Schools can earn funding rewards of up to $500 based on the points they collect throughout the school year.

Hefty ReNew Bags Available by Request

Orange bags are popping up all over the district, and your school could be next! Request Hefty ReNew bags using our form and start collecting hard-to-recycle plastics in a Teacher Planning Center, staff lounge, FCS classroom, or anywhere else plastics are currently going into the landfill bin. Acceptable items include plastic cutlery, plastic wrapper, plastic film, styrofoam, and much more!

GSRP Tip: Participating in the Hefty ReNew Bag Pilot Program earns your school 10 points through the Green Schools Recognition Program.

Sheridan Elementary PLC Day

Our team brought a Sustainability Experience to Sheridan Elementary School for their Day Zero in November! Sheridan students learned about how food makes it from the farm to their plate, created posters, and sang along to a farm-to-table song. Thank you to the volunteers from UNL and Partnership for Healthy Lincoln-AmeriCorps members for helping make it a great day!
