Recycling and composting reports

Our waste diversion programs ended earlier than usual this year, so we won’t have our typical April environmental impact reports. But we are still collecting data where possible, and will share the annual environmental impact report in our August newsletter. You can always check out past environmental impact reports and learn more about how our recycling and composting programs work HERE.

Sustainability Spotlight: 50th Anniversary Earth Day Celebrations

This year, students and staff got creative at home to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 22nd. We released our first ever LPS Earth Week Bingo Card and encouraged families pick something from each of the themed days: Energy, Consumption and Waste, Climate Action, Water, and Great Outdoors/Arbor Day.

Green Schools Recognition Program results

The Green Schools Recognition Program just wrapped up its fourth year, and we are excited to share that over 210 activities were reported from 15 different schools. This program provides schools with a list of green activities to choose from and complete throughout the year. Each activity has a point value, and funds can be earned for reaching certain levels of achievement. Congratulations to our seven participating schools that earned enough points to receive sustainability project funding. Sheridan Elementary is our top earner for the elementary level, which awards them $500. Mickle and Pound Middle Schools are the top earners at the secondary level, each receiving $350 in sustainability project funding.

Mickle Middle School selected as Green Ribbon School

Congratulations to our very own Mickle Middle School for being selected as a Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education! This award recognizes schools based on their progress in the three green ribbon pillars:

  1. Reduce environmental impact and costs
  2. Improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff
  3. Provide effective environmental sustainability education

Stay connected over the summer

Connect with us on twitter and our facebook page. We will be sharing more of the green schools activities completed this year, as well as ideas and resources for continuing sustainability actions at home!
