Happy Earth Month!

Earth Day is April 22nd, and we have lots of opportunities and resources for planning your school celebration!

These Earth Day Bingo Cards are available for all school levels to take on activities related to waste, nature, energy, water, and climate action.

Social media managers at each school also have access to an Earth Day content library to share with their school community. You can join the conversation by using #LPSEarthDay when posting about the activities happening at your school.

Lincoln Earth Day Celebration is April 20th

Come visit the LPS Sustainability team at Lincoln’s Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 20th, from 10 am to 2 pm at Nebraska Innovation Campus. In addition to many other booth exhibitors, there will be live music, local food, face painting, and a clothing swap. Click HERE to see the schedule for the day or even sign up as a volunteer!

GSRP Tip: Join the celebration and earn points when you complete activities on an Earth Day Bingo card

Two Ways to Recycle Metal

April is a big month for metal recycling! Drop off aluminum cans at Green Quest Recycling and let them know you’re donating to the LPS Cans4Books Recycling Drive. Proceeds will go toward books for your school’s library, with the opportunity for additional gift cards for top-earning schools!

The LPS Scrap Metal Drive also wraps up this month, so take advantage of this chance to offload your unwanted metal for a good cause! Bring your accepted items to either of the two participating dropoff locations, and ask to donate the revenue to the LPS Recycling Program.

Jumpstart your garden with free seeds

Earl May generously donated seeds to LPS Sustainability, so we’ve bundled them up for schools to plant! Each kit contains 5 packets of assorted vegetable seeds. We expect these to go quickly, so send in your request today!

GSRP Tip: Earn points for many different activities completed in your school garden space

Going green at the LPS Science & Engineering Fair

LPS Sustainability awarded 12 green ribbons to students who developed earth- or environment-focused projects for this year’s Science & Engineering Fair. Recipients completed projects on topics like gardening, solar power, effects of a changing climate, and more. Congratulations and great work to all green ribbon recipients!

Roper students examine food and energy

The district’s latest PLC Day Sustainability Experience took place at Roper Elementary School! Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln supported activities centered around food’s journey from the farm to our schools, and LES staff shared their knowledge about sources of renewable energy. We’re so grateful to our community partners for helping us bring so much learning and laughter throughout the day!

LPS Sustainability shares with national network

Brittney and Mandy traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, last month for the annual Green Schools Conference. CLC Community Builder, Ron Kellogg, joined the team for a panel presentation on gardens and outdoor learning spaces at LPS. They shared successes and goals for the future, as well as had the chance to learn from other school districts with an eye on sustainability.

GSRP Deadline is May 6

The deadline for submitting 2023-24 activities for the Green Schools Recognition Program is coming up on Monday, May 6th. Please be sure to share with us all of the wonderful activities your school has done this year to help our environment! We are excited to see how many schools can be recognized and earn sustainability project funding for next year! Access the activity submission form HERE
