Sustainability Spotlight: Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Electric vehicle charging stations are the newest sustainable features at Lincoln Public Schools. Thanks to funding made available by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy and Lincoln Electric System, seven level-2 Chargepoint charging stations were installed at LPS properties. Each of the six high schools have a station near their main entrance and one is at the LPS Operations building [more].

Lincoln Recycles Week kicks off November 10th

November 15th is America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful initiative that is a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. The City of Lincoln has organized a week of activities to celebrate and support recycling opportunities in our community, starting with the LPS Scrap Metal Drive. Click HERE for the latest details on all of the activities planned that week.

We also encourage all of our schools and families to celebrate America Recycles Day by organizing their own event and taking the #BERECYCLED pledge.

Lower Platte South NRD virtual classroom is available

Normally many of our students would be heading out on field trips throughout the school year with the staff and volunteers from the Lower Platte South NRD. With current restrictions on field trips, the NRD has stepped up and created a Virtual Classroom and videos of their field trips to the Platte Rivers State Park and Lincoln Saline Wetland Nature Center. Their website has other videos and activity sheets available too.

No Pumpkins in the Dumpkins on November 1st

Big Red Worms is sponsoring their 3rd annual "No Pumpkins in the Dumpkins" on November 1st. This program will give Lincoln residents the ability to compost their pumpkins at three Lincoln locations this year, instead of heading to the landfill. The day after Halloween, you can bring your pumpkins to one of our three locations. Look for the large red or black trailers in the parking lot.

Sunday, November 1st, 12 pm - 2 pm, at these locations:

  • Northeast High School - N. 63rd & Adams
  • Southwest High school - S. 14th & Pine Lake
  • Southeast High School - S. 37th & Van Dorn

Garbology kits adapted for kindergarten

Our kindergarten students start their Garbology science unit in first quarter and learn all about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost! Typically, the unit is accompanied by a presentation from members of the LPS Sustainability Department, Keep Lincoln Lancaster County Beautiful, and the City of Lincoln Solid Waste Management Division. However, due to COVID precautions, teachers were sent Garbology Lesson Kits to use in their own classrooms order to give students the same experience with this presentation while keeping them safe. Students watch a video showing Lincoln’s Bluff Road Landfill, learn about litter prevention, and see real examples of products made from the items we recycle every day. Students also take home a pencil made from recycled newspaper and a Waste Reduction and Recycling Guide to share with their family.

GSNN resources available for LPS

Lincoln Public Schools is a member of the Green Schools National Network, which means ALL of our staff have free access to Green Teacher Magazine. You can read their most recent Fall 2020 issue or check out any previous issues by using the log-in username: GSNN and password: (GreenTeacherMembers).

There are also tons of great stories in the Green Schools Catalyst Quarterly. Check out the latest issue HERE to learn more about why whole school sustainability matters in a COVID-19 world.

You can also create your very own GSNN membership page to stay up-to-speed on the latest in green, healthy, and sustainable schools through Green Teacher magazine, GreenNotes, and the Green Schools Catalyst Quarterly.

It’s never too late to join the Green Schools Recognition Program

The points are rolling in from our Green Schools Recognition Program activities. Several schools had green team meetings, worked in their garden, and took their classroom lessons outside! Adams Elementary showed their students how to reuse old clothes and make t-shirt bags, which is a great example of merging together sustainability and creativity! And Park Middle is making sure candy wrappers don't end up in the landfill this spooky season with their Trick or Trash recycling box.

Learn more about the Green Schools Recognition Program. You can join anytime!
