4 more schools join compost program

Four more schools have added organics collection to their cafeteria! Clinton and Elliott Elementary schools and Northeast and East High schools have all joined the LPS Compost Program, bringing total participating schools up to 53. The final schools will join in August 2019 making this a district-wide program for our standard cafeterias. This program collects food scraps, paper products, and other compostable dishes to be taken to local composting facilities. The composting program is expected to help LPS achieve a 50% landfill diversion rate for the district.

UNL and LPS partner for Green Apple Day of Service

For several years now, the LPS Sustainability department has partnered with students from the Environmental Studies program at UNL to give them first-hand experience sharing their passion for the environment with the next generation. This year, seven groups of college students worked with LPS teachers on projects for Green Apple Day of Service, a movement that celebrates the role schools have in inspiring future leaders of sustainability.

Beattie garden blossoms with learning

Originally started back in 2000, the school garden at Beattie has consistently grown through the years.  Every year sees an updated portion of the six-acre space, usually centered around a theme to engage and excited the students.  Beattie currently boasts a Platte River Garden, a Prairie Garden, and Anti-bullying Garden, a Berry Patch, and many more. Each of these gardens support topics required in the children’s curriculum, allowing the space to be used as a place for active learning.  Students also have the chance to take a garden class, focused on teaching them the fundamentals in outdoor education (more).
