Sustainability Spotlight: LPSDO Waste Redesign

The Compost Program has now arrived at the District Office! LPS is already collecting organic waste for composting from 57 school cafeterias, and now the District Office (LPSDO) is the most recent building to join the program. But that is not all that has changed at LPSDO! With the collaboration of staff and custodians, waste stations were redesigned which included uniform labeling, right sizing bins, and making sure appropriate bins were available throughout the building. Read more about their updates and the impact so far HERE.

E.N. Thompson Forum focuses on the environment

The E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues is a speaker series presented by UNL each year. The theme this year is Regeneration: Leadership and Hope for a Changing Planet. Each presentation is free and open to the public, and this year the lectures can also be streamed online.

The first talk took place on September 2nd and featured Mary Pipher, a local author, activist, and clinical psychologist. The recording is available HERE.

The Forum planning committee has also developed resource documents for each of the speakers, and these are available for teachers and students to use as enhancement for each talk. Those documents have been collected HERE.

Check out the SCHEDULE of speakers planned for the rest of the school year.

Nebraska Forest Service FREE virtual classroom visits

The Nebraska Forest Service's Conservation Education Team has curated a series of virtual classroom visits with lessons targeting state and national standards while translating conservation and environmental education in a digital format. Programs are available with grade-specific content for ages early childhood to seniors in high school. These free programs can help both formal and nonformal educators keep conservation in their classroom curricula in this current COVID-19 crisis and beyond.

Each visit lasts around 30 - 45 minutes and is live via zoom. A NFS conservation educator will lead the students through the lesson or activity with assistance from the classroom educator. Any needed materials or print outs will be emailed to the teacher ahead of time.

Click HERE for their list of available programs. They are also willing to create a program that fits your curricular needs if you can’t find what you are looking for. Contact them for more information and to schedule your virtual classroom visit: jack.hilgert@unl.edu
