The Custodial Supervisor at Meadow Lane Elementary School, Tom Laswell, promoted waste reduction earlier this school year by implementing a waste container size reduction. This simple switch is continually benefitting the school and the custodial department as well as educating students and staff about reducing waste [more].

Many of our schools in the district have some type of garden or outdoor learning space for engaging students in nature and environmental education. The spaces are great for lessons across the board whether it is math, science, reading, or even an art project. In an effort to help schools understand best practices and acceptable components, we have created a School Garden FAQ.
If you need help starting a garden or maintaining an existing one, the LPS Sustainability department and several community partners have also worked together to develop an LPS School Garden Manual.

North Star biology teacher, Tracie Chapo, has been using the wetlands outside of her school as a living laboratory ensuring multiple state standards are taught, while also teaching students and the community about the importance of wetlands. Chapo teaches about migration, competition, hibernation, biodiversity, food webs, and more, all through the North Star wetlands [more].

The results of the Eastridge Elementary Recycle Holiday Lights Drive are in! This year, the Lincoln Community recycled 15,561 pounds of holiday lights! The drive raised a record of $4,668!
Eastridge PTO gives back 10% to Lincoln Fire Fighters Operation Warm and Scrap Central is matching that donation for a total of $933.66.
Over the 7 years the event has been held, 64,000 lbs of holiday lights have been diverted from the landfill through Scrap Central Inc recycling totaling $22,000 raised. This event is just one of many great examples of LPS schools raising money AND helping the planet!

In case you missed it, LPS Communications shared a great spotlight on a partnership with Lincoln Electric System and getting renewable energy into the classroom [more].
