While Lincoln Public Schools classes and activities are cancelled, the LPS Sustainability team will continue to provide updates on the amazing sustainability work that our schools have been doing this year, and share resources for continuing to connect with our environment while remote learning. If your fellow staff members or your students and their families are looking for environmental education activities, Captain Planet Foundation and Project Learning Tree have already collected some great resources that can be carried out at home.

Sustainability goals incorporated into new high schools
In 2019, the first set of Sustainable Building Principles were developed and incorporated in the LPS Design Guidelines with the intent of taking our next projects to a higher level of sustainability. These principles are now being incorporated into the 2020 Bond Issue projects, including the new high schools. A recent preview of the high school design concepts included a focus on the sustainability goals for these buildings, such as solar panels, native landscaping, and rain gardens. Learn more about the high school designs and their sustainability goals.
‘Going Green’ at the Science Fair
We had a great time at the Zoetis-LPS-GSK Science Fair a few weeks ago, handing out our ‘Going Green’ ribbons! Students received these ribbons for choosing a project that focused on an environmental or sustainability related topic. Some of the projects that received green ribbons asked questions including: how much energy can wind produce, which recycled materials make the best paper, what is the best renewable energy, and can CO2 can be used to fight climate change.
Cans4Books Recycling Drive
Cans4Books will be cancelled for this school year. If your building has been collecting cans for this program, you are certainly still welcome to recycle your cans at any open location in town and donate the funding to your school library. Please call to verify availability before taking materials to one of these businesses: Recycling Locations by Type of Item.
Lincoln Earth Day Celebration
Earth Day is celebrating its 50th year on April 22nd, but unfortunately the Lincoln Earth Day in person celebration has been cancelled for this year. Their WEBSITE will be updated with ways to celebrate virtually and take climate action at home, so continue to check back for more information.
Scrap Metal Drive to support LPS Recycling Program
While many of us are at home in the coming weeks, spring cleaning may be in full force! If you come across any scrap metal items to be recycled, you can still drop them off at Sadoff Iron and Metal Company or Alter Metal Recycling to have it recycled. All types of scrap metal will be accepted, including aluminum and tin cans, pots and pans, appliances, wiring, sinks, bathtubs and electric motors. When you arrive, tell them that you would like to donate all or part of the revenue from your metal to the LPS Recycling Program. Funds raised will help LPS replace worn out steel recycling containers. The old containers will be recycled as scrap metal and replaced with containers manufactured from recycled steel, closing the recycling loop.
