Sustainability Spotlight: Meet our new Assistant Sustainability Coordinator

The LPS Sustainability Team is growing! Thanks to funding provided by the Nebraska Department of Energy and Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling Grant Program, there are now two full time staff members supporting sustainability initiatives across the district. Mandy Koehler was hired in January as the new Assistant Sustainability Coordinator.

Green Schools Virtual Gathering March 2nd

Calling all green schools advocates in Nebraska! You are invited to join the USGBC Nebraska Flatwater Green Schools Committee for another virtual gathering on Tuesday, March 2nd at 4 pm CDT. Learn more about how our peers have been adapting their green school activities through this challenging school year. And with spring just around the corner, it is a great time to discuss plans and resources for outdoor education. This will be an open opportunity to connect with our fellow green schools supporters and discuss what we are experiencing and share suggestions.

Printing Reduction across the District

Looking back on 2020, we are able to reflect on the sustainable efforts accomplished around the district. Although the COVID-19 pandemic created challenges for our schools, it also encouraged a paperless environment. Compared to 2019, printing volumes dropped almost 32 million impressions in 2020, which saved the district thousands of dollars.

Read more about how the district has been reducing paper consumption over the past year.

Climate Action Bookshelf

We teamed up with the Library Services department to develop a Climate Action Bookshelf that highlights environmentally themed books and resources that are available to students and staff through LPS Libraries. On the ‘bookshelf’ you will find options for all ages including picture books, chapter books, and even some digital resources.

Check it out and share!

Earth Day is April 22nd

Earth Day is coming up on Thursday, April 22nd, and there are plenty of ways for schools to celebrate that day, week, or even all month long! The Green Schools Recognition Program has a variety of activities and resources for inspiration, and more details on 2021 Earth Day opportunities will be coming out soon.

School Garden Connections

Warmer weather will be here soon, and we know school gardens and outdoor learning will be on many people’s minds. As a reminder, LPS and Community Crops have partnered up to develop a centralized communications hub for our school garden volunteers and partners all across the district. Any school garden coordinators and volunteers are invited to join, just e-mail Brittney Albin, balbin@lps.org to get signed up!

We also have our School Garden Manual available for starting and maintaining a successful school garden.

8th Annual Recycle Holiday Lights Drive Results

The results of the Eastridge Elementary 8th Annual Recycle Holiday Lights Drive are in! This year, the Lincoln Community recycled 16,003 pounds of holiday lights! The drive raised a record of $8,106.17!

Eastridge PTO gives back 25% to Lincoln Fire Fighters Operation Warm and another 25% to the LPS Science Focus Program. Scrap Central Inc also matches funds raised for those two groups.

Over the 8 years the event has been held, 80,003 lbs of holiday lights have been diverted from the landfill through Scrap Central Inc recycling, totaling $30,106.17 raised. This event is just one of many great examples of LPS schools raising money AND helping the planet!
