Recycling and composting reports: 2019-20 school year

Lincoln Public Schools continues to serve as a community leader in waste management. During the 2019-20 school year, over 900,000 pounds of recyclables were collected, and over 1.25 million pounds of organic material was collected for composting. We are very excited to report that the district-wide diversion rate reached 49% for the year. Of course the 2020-21 school year is looking very different in many ways, but schools are continuing to support these programs in their cafeterias and throughout their buildings.

Environmental impact reports are now available for the 2019-20 school year. As a result of recycling efforts last year, LPS saved:

  • 6,649 trees
  • 1,603,649 kWh of energy
  • 2,737,938 gallons of water
  • 1,291 cubic yard of local landfill space
  • 23,468 lbs of air pollution
  • 160,365 gallons of fuel

Sustainability Spotlight: Resource Highlights

Welcome back to school! This summer, the Lincoln Public Schools Sustainability Team has been busy brainstorming and creating content for our schools. Having projects and activities that are adaptable and easy for staff and families to do is important to continuing the sustainability culture in our district [more].

Garden Volunteers Update

We are so grateful for all of our garden volunteers who patiently navigated through our access process while our sites were closed earlier this year. It was wonderful to see so many dedicated individuals and families ready to maintain these spaces - over 80 people signed up to help with garden maintenance across the district! Now that sites are open again, we are still encouraging our garden volunteers to submit their contact information so we can continue to communicate important updates regarding garden access and safety. Please share this form with any school garden volunteers who hadn’t already filled out an access form.

Digging Deeper with Backyard Farmer

We had the pleasure of joining the Digging Deeper with Backyard Farmer show for a two-part series on Sustainable School Gardening. Click here for the Part 1 and Part 2 videos.

LES Sustainable Living Festival

We enjoyed being a part of the first digital Sustainable Living Festival put together by Lincoln Electric System. All of the videos from their live events, mini sessions, and community partners are available HERE. And be sure to check out our own LPS Sustainability video we created for this event on reducing our carbon footprint.
