  • 184,246 kWh of energy

Green Schools Recognition Program Activities

The activities for the Green Schools Recognition Program have been tallied, and we have had 90 green activities reported throughout the district so far this year! Schools across LPS are participating in the program and a couple of them will already be receiving funding for a future sustainability project based on their activities so far. Some activities that have been reported this year include: green team meetings, guest speakers, recycling campaigns, outdoor classroom lessons, and much more!

We know there are schools across the district that haven't submitted activities yet but have been busy completing activities that can count to the GSRP!  It is never too late to start participating in the GSRP and help your school go green! The last day to submit events will be May 3rd. We are looking forward to seeing all the exciting green activities that our schools complete!

School Garden Inventory Now Available

Many of our schools in the district have some type of garden or outdoor learning space for engaging students in nature and environmental education. We know these spaces are great for lessons across the board whether it is math, science, reading, or even an art project. In an effort to learn more about where these spaces exist and how they are being used, we have developed a School Gardens Inventory. If you have information to share about a school garden that you don’t see on our list, please fill out this FORM.

If you need help starting up a garden or maintaining an existing one, the LPS Sustainability department and several community partners have worked together to develop an LPS School Garden Manual.

Green Apple Day of Service Mini Grants

If you register a Green Apple Day of Service project by March 15th you will be eligible for a mini-grant and for the Green Apple Awards. You can find more information about the mini-grant funding process HERE. There are plenty of projects that qualify as a Green Apple Day of Service project (likely an event or project you already do!) but here are some IDEAS if you want some.

The LPS Sustainability office is also happy to help support you with your project ideas, so please reach out if you have any questions or would like assistance.

Earth Day is April 22nd

Earth Day is officially on the calendar for April 22nd, but we hope to see celebrations happening at our schools and community all throughout the month of April! Don’t miss these resources for Earth Day celebration ideas:

Scrap Metal Drive Reminder

Spring will be here before we know it, and as you start the process of spring-cleaning, please remember to recycle those old appliances and donate funds to the LPS Scrap Metal Drive. For more information about where to go and what materials are accepted, check out our Events Page.

6th Annual Recycle Holiday Lights Drive Results

The results of the Eastridge Elementary Recycle Holiday Lights Drive are in! This year, the Lincoln Community recycled 12,940 pounds of holiday lights! The drive raised a record of $3,882!

Eastridge PTO gives back 10% to Lincoln Fire Fighters Operation Warm and Scrap Central is matching that donation for a total of $776.40.

Over the 6 years the event has been held, 49,000 lbs of holiday lights have been diverted from the landfill through Scrap Central Inc recycling. This event is just one of many great examples of LPS schools raising money AND helping the planet!

Do you still have holiday lights to recycle? Eastridge has you covered! They will be accepting holiday lights and a long list of items accepted at no charge during their 6th Annual Spring Community Recycling Event held on Saturday, April 6th, 10am-12pm.
