Recycling and composting reports: 2017-18 school year

Lincoln Public Schools continues to serve as a community leader in waste management. During the 2017-18 school year, 1.46 million pounds of recyclables were collected, and over 880,000 pounds of organic material was collected for composting. Prior to the compost program, there was a district wide goal to achieve a 25% recycling rate. This means that 25% of material thrown away in the district would be diverted from the landfill and recycled instead. We are very excited to report that the diversion rate reached 40% with the added composting efforts.

Environmental impact reports are now available for the 2017-18 school year. As a result of recycling efforts last year, LPS saved:

  • 10,902 trees
  • 2,629,336 kWh of energy
  • 4,489,111 gallons of water
  • 2,116 cubic yard of local landfill space
  • 38,478 lbs of air pollution
  • 262,934 gallons of fuel

Green Schools Recognition Program kicks off third year and new structure

Last year, 23 schools participated in the Green Schools Recognition program and reported over 400 green activities. Top performing schools also received sustainability project funding totaling $1,050.

We are excited to launch the third year of this program and a new structure! We have new activities, a ‘Create Your Own Activity Option’, more funding, and anyone can report these activities for points. Also, the top points earning school at the elementary and the secondary level will now each receive $500 in sustainability funding!
