Recycling and composting report March 2023

Environmental impact reports are available each month. As a result of recycling efforts in March, LPS saved:

  • 1,312 trees
  • 316,364 kWh of energy
  • 540,134 gallons of water
  • 255 cubic yards of local landfill space
  • 4,630 lbs of air pollution
  • 31,636 gallons of fuel

Sustainability Spotlight: Katie Mohr at Norwood Park

School Earth Day Celebrations

To celebrate Earth Day this year, all LPS students and staff were asked the question, “How do you pledge to help our planet?”  Hundreds of Earth Day pledges were received and showed different ways students and staff were committed to helping the planet.

Scrap Metal Drive Raises $2,600

Thank you to all of the community members who took their scrap metal to one of our partners, Alter Metal Recycling and Sadoff Iron and Metal Recycling Company, and donated to the LPS Recycling Program. This year the LPS Scrap Metal Drive recycled over 42,400 pounds of metal and raised $2,684 [more]!


Green Schools Recognition Program - Deadline May 5th

The Green School Recognition Program will be wrapping up soon, so be sure to submit all your activities from the 2022-23 school year by Friday, May 5th. If you have done any green school projects (planted a garden, held green team meetings, hosted an Earth Day celebration, shared out sustainability tips,  put on a bike to school event, coordinated a litter clean up, etc.) then you have points and FUNDING waiting for you! 4th Quarter Garden Event on May 18th

This quarter’s garden gathering is showcasing the Family Garden Night at McPhee Elementary on Thursday, May 18th from 5:30 - 7:00pm. This gathering is going to demonstrate what it looks like to organize an engaging family garden event so other schools can learn from their example! The event will include community partners, garden related outreach booths, food, and other activities organized by the McPhee CLC. Join in on the fun and get inspired with ideas to get your own school garden event started!


Important Update: Marker Recycling 

The BIC Marker Recycling Program will be closing at the end of this month. To ensure your markers are shipped for recycling, please send them to the LPS Operations office by Wednesday, May 24th. Clearly mark the box with “Attn: Brittney Albin” and your school name to earn credit.


Locker Clean Out - Recycling Reminder

It’s that time of year again for locker clean-outs, desk cleaning, and file sorting. Please remember to recycle your purged materials! During end of year cleaning it's important to make sure recycling containers are readily available, you may even consider setting out donation collection bins for items to be reused as well. If you have questions about what can be recycled at LPS, please review the Recycling Guidelines or contact the Sustainability Team at sustainability@lps.org. 


Student Opportunities

  • Summer Internship Opportunity: Beyond School Bells is looking for high school students interested in conservation and outdoor career experiences. The application for the two week Conservation Management Internship is closing soon - apply now!
  • Summer Reading: The Climate Action Bookshelf has added new books! Thank you to Library Services for maintaining this resource for our students and staff - be sure to check it out for some summer reading. 
  • Youth Leadership Lincoln: Connect with other students in the Lincoln area and grow your leadership skills in this local youth program. Applicants should live in Lancaster County and must be going into 10th Grade for the 2023-24 school year. Learn more about this group and the upcoming application deadline.
