Upcoming changes in immunizations for 2011/2012

Nebraska will require a second dose of varicella (chicken pox) vaccine starting July 1, 2011 for ALL STUDENTS AGE 5 AND OLDER who have not had chicken pox.  Over 10,000 of the 35,000 students in Lincoln Public School have had the disease.  High school students make up the majority of those that have had the disease.

The varicella vaccine first became available in 1995.  Prior to 1995, about 4 million cases of chicken pox occurred annually in the U.S.  The number of cases continues to decline. In addition to protecting vaccinated individuals, increased protection also occurs for those that are at risk due to their inability to get the vaccine due to allergies or other medical conditions. One dose of varicella vaccine, or evidence of disease, has been required for school entry and 7th grade since July of 2004.  The Center for Disease Control reports that 15-20 children out of every 100 were not protected against the disease with just one dose.  Vaccinated students may have had a “break through” case of chicken pox which is usually a much milder form of the disease.

To prepare for this change in State Law, LPS School nurses are in the process of notifying families of students that have record of only one varicella vaccine date and/or no record of having had the disease on file at the school.  These families will be notified by the end of January.

  • If you receive notification from your student’s school and your student has had chickenpox disease or a second varicella vaccine, please provide this information to the health office at your student’s school as soon as possible.
  • If you receive notification from your student’s school and your child has not had chicken pox or a second varicella vaccine, please contact your medical provider or Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department at 441-8065 to make an appointment for a second varicella vaccine. Please notify the health office of any vaccines that your student receives so that updates can be made to his/her immunization record.
