What a difference a year makes.

In the early morning hours, following Memorial Day of 2011, the Lincoln Public Schools District Office building was totally destroyed by fire.

This year on the day after Memorial Day, 2012, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held to celebrate the beginning of a brand new LPS District Offices:  11 a.m. Tuesday, May 29th on the site at 59th and O streets.

The ceremony will be a time for remembering, a time for welcoming and a time for breaking ground.

“What a great day to come together to mark a new chapter in our journey,” LPS Superintendent Steve Joel said.  “The day will symbolize the tenacity of Lincoln Public Schools and celebrate the spirit of renewal as we take the first step – in coming home.”

The ceremony will feature remarks from Joel, Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler and representatives from Whole Foods – expected to open a store at the corner of 59th and O streets – and Continuum Partners, the firm developing the site with LPS.

Joel noted that the LPS District Office building is the center of education for the community.

“This new building will stand as a symbol and  testament to the legacy of excellence at Lincoln Public Schools.”

Completion for the new building is expected in the summer of 2013.
