Lincoln Public Schools
MS Office 2004 & 2008 for Mac
Originally published on: November 18, 2009
Microsoft, versions 2004 & 2008
USE: Used as the standard for word processing, slideshows and spreadsheets.
LICENSE: Microsoft Office 2008 comes installed on all new Mac computers at LPS. Office 2004 versions existed on Mac computers purchased before 2009.
The main components of the Microsoft Office suite are the powerhouse productivity applications of Word (for word processing), PowerPoint (slideshows) and Excel (spreadsheets). Office applications for the Mac are very similar to the equivalent applications for Windows in the Office 2003 version.
Word documents (.doc) are exchanged widely in the district. Some district forms and templates are being delivered in this format. PowerPoint (.ppt) is the standard for slide show presentations and offers power and flexibility in delivering multimedia content (movies, sound, graphics) and interactivity (links, buttons, actions) to the slide show. Excel format (.xls) is the district standard for spreadsheets. Templates have been created in Excel to help LPS schools and departments track budgets.
Although version 2008 typically save files with an "x" at the end of the extension (.docx, .pptx, .xlsx), Macintoshes at Lincoln Public Schools are set up so this software runs in Compatability Mode, keeping the file extensions compatible with earlier versions of Office.
