Careers on Wheels keeps on a rollin'

Originally published on: October 8, 2009

Irving students had herd about the annual 8th grade event called Careers On Wheels (COW), but they didn’t know what would be rollin’ (or flyin’) in!  The event, started in 2006, offers career exploration for 8th grade students who will be moving on to high school at the end of the school year.

This year, students got a look at careers connected to vehicles … including Best Buy’s Geek Squad, General Excavating, Lancaster County CSI Mobile Command Unit, Lincoln Fire and Rescue, Lincoln Police Department, Lincoln Waste Water Management, Nebraska Game and Parks, Nebraska State Patrol K-9 Unit, OmaLink, Stephens and Smith Construction (boom truck) and Valentino’s Catering among others.

The event kicked off with the landing of a Black Hawk helicopter from the Army National Guard.  General Roma Amundson, the highest ranking officer, was on hand to talk about military careers.  Participating businesses and organizations explain how their vehicles work and, where possible, students are allowed to “tour.”
