Get your influenza (flu) shot!

From LPS Health Services

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses, like influenza (flu), this fall and winter is more important than ever. Prevention of and reduction in the severity of influenza and reduction of outpatient illnesses, hospitalization and intensive care unit admissions through influenza vaccination will help alleviate stress on the health care system.

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death.

Flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk.

"Seasonal influenza" refers to the limited periodic outbreaks of respiratory illness that typically occur in the fall and winter in the United States. While most people have some immunity to the circulating strains of the virus, annual influenza vaccine is recommended. (National Association of School Nurses)

The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits such as avoiding people who are sick, covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent flu. (Centers for Disease Control)

CDC recommends getting a flu vaccination in September or October but getting vaccinated anytime during the flu season can help protect you. Everyone six months and older can get vaccinated this season.

The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) will return and will be offering immunizations for LPS employees and their families.
