Sam Steinberger from Lincoln East High School took home second place in the High School Reproduction category for his Kabuto Chairs in the Association of Woodworking Furnishings & Suppliers (AWFS) National Fresh Wood Competition for students considering a career in woodworking. His chairs were inspired by work of the designers Rossi and Iaviacoli featured in the Kabuto restaurant in Tokyo Japan.

Trevin Roberson, a student at Lincoln Southeast High School, won Honorable Mention in the same category for his Morris-style chair Devine Recline. Robert Salzman was selected as a finalist in the Case Good category for his Office Credenza.

The biennial event, held as part of AWFSFair, an international trade show featuring all products and supplies for the woodworking industry, attracted 137 entries from 50 different post-secondary and high schools in the United States and Canada.

AWFS covers the cost of shipping the entries to and from the fair, and the travel and hotel expenses to bring the students and their teachers to Las Vegas.

Judges ranged from representatives from the Furniture Society and the Sustainable Furnishings Council to internationally renowned furniture makers and the owner of a popular woodworking website, providing a variety of perspectives to the judging process. The entries were judged based on the design innovation and quality of presentation, the use of materials, methods and processes, the functionality and achievement of design intent and craftsmanship and quality.
