CONGRATULATIONS TO JODI GEHR, 2011 OUTSTANDING DECA ADVISOR ...

Jodi Gehr, Southeast DECA Advisor shares a couple of DECA quotes from a few of her students who will be competing at the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Orlando. Jodi writes that in an effort to fund raise financial support for their DECA ICDC trip, she asked students to write what this experience would mean to them......

I've been involved in a lot of organizations, but being in DECA has been an experience I will always carry with me. Being a part of this club has taught me valuable communication, networking, and business skills that I will be able to use for the rest of my life. DECA applies what we do in marketing class to the real world; it makes us not only better business leaders, but also better consumers. There is also a strong focus on community service and giving back that teaches the importance of being ethical and making a positive impact on the world.

Attending the International Career Development Conference will make the impact DECA has had on my life even more beneficial. It took a lot of hard work, time and dedication to place 1st for our Public Relations written project. Being able to compete with something we've put so much of ourselves into with others from around the globe will be very rewarding and I'm looking foward to seeing what other students did. Going to ICDC also gives DECA members the opportunity to meet people from around the world and learn about their lives. It also is a tremendous bonding experience for the people who are going. Attending ICDC is an experience I will never forget and I am so blessed to have the opportunity to go again this year...... Kari Nelson, Southeast High School

Katie Wandzilak writes......DECA has become one of the main factors in my life. During my freshman year, I was shy and self-conscious. But after going to my first Central Region Conference as a freshman, I made friends with upperclassmen who helped me break out of my shell. Now I am not afraid to go up to people and talk to them about their life and make new friends. DECA has taught me how to network, become a leader, gain confidence, and I know that it is preparing me for my future as a businessperson. We have a DECA Wall of Fame at Lincoln Southeast where LSE DECA alumni write about their lives. Each of them talks about how DECA has shaped his or her life and I know that is is currently shaping my life.

I want to go to ICDC in Orlando this spring because I know that it is a once in a lifetime change to meet new people who are just as passionate about DECA as I am. My partner and I have worked about 50 hours on our 30 page Public Relations Project about The Tijuana Project. At State, we received 1st place for it, and now we want to take it to a national level and show it to people from not only the United States, but all over the world. ICDC will give me the chance to grow as a person, DECA member, and a leader. After placing at State, one of my friends who went to ICDC last year told me, "Get ready for hands down, the best experiences you'll ever have." I would not want to miss this opportunity for the world.

Whats new in Business Administration...?
Did you know that more college students major in Business Administration than any other area? Do you know that Business Administration related majors find jobs more easily in a tough economy? The most recent enewsletter from MBAResearch provides current research that supports the importance of business and marketing education. Lisa Berkey, Program Director of High School of Business, provides the following research: Landing jobs in a tough economy. A survey of human resources professionals cites business administration-related majors as three of six degrees most likely to land jobs this year. Serving the masses. More college students major in business administration than any other area. In 2009, UCLA researchers found that nationwide 14.4% of all incoming freshmen declare a major in business administration (including marketing, finance, managmenet, etc.). Source: The American Freshman: National Norms for Fall 2009, Cooperative Institution Resoure Program, (UCLA, 2008). Improving college graduation rates. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is working to identify why more than half of all college students will not earn a degree or credential (NCES, IDEPS 2006-07) and what can be done to improve that rate. Myths and Realities About Why So Many Students Fail to Finish College identifies the dificulty of balanceing a full-time job with college as the primary reason students leave school. Two of the suggestions given for addressing this are directly applicable to high school business and marketing programs: 1) "Simplified and transparent transfer and articulation agreements between secondary and postsecondary schools, and amoung postsecondary institution." 2) "Accelerated, condensed course delivery that allows for more rapid progression toward a degree." Many of our business and marketing programs are already doing one or both of these.
