Mission Statement

The mission of Social Studies in the Lincoln Public Schools is to develop capable citizens of a democratic society who are empowered with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable them to make informed decisions in a culturally diverse and interdependent world.

In order that men [and women] may be prepared for self-government, their apprenticeship must commence in childhood. The great moral attribute of self-government cannot be born and matured in a day; and if school children are not trained to it, we only prepare ourselves for disappointment.

--Horace Mann

Social Studies is an integral part of the K-12 core curriculum in the Lincoln Public Schools. Instruction is based on grade-level and course specific standards and objectives aligned with the Nebraska State Standards for Social Studies and History. Student proficiency is reported to the state based on formal assessment results using grade/course specific Criterion Referenced Tests.
