Local Substitute Information
Requirements for Obtaining a Local Substitute Certificate for Lincoln Public Schools
Step 1
Lincoln Public Schools’ Requirements For A Local Substitute Teacher Certificate
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) OR Teacher Education Student of Senior Standing or above
- Complete a Lincoln Public Schools’ Substitute Teacher application – include the names, addresses and phone number of six references
- Submit an official college transcript showing degree(s) or teacher preparation course work
- After turning in your application, you must attend the required Local Substitute Teacher Orientation – attendance at each session is limited to the first 50 that pre-register
- Complete the TI interview (https://gx.gallup.com/teacherinsight.gx District Code 20180432
- Human Resources will run a complete background check
Human Resources will determine suitability to teach based upon all of the above. If approved, Human Resources will then send a letter to the substitute teacher candidate to take to the State Department of Education when applying for a local substitute teacher certificate.
Step 2
Nebraska Department of Education Requirements for a Local Substitute Teacher Certificate
- Complete NDE’s Local Substitute Teacher Certificate application
- Submit an official college transcript which reflects completion of the required course work as determined by the Nebraska Department of Education
- Submit a letter from Lincoln Public Schools requesting that you, as the local substitute teacher candidate, be granted a local substitute teacher’s certificate
- Pay $55 for the certificate
If approved, the NDE will mail your local substitute teacher certificate to you.
Step 3
When your local substitute teaching certificate is sent to you by NDE, please bring it to Human Resources to register it and have a photocopy placed in your file. When your certificate is registered in HR, you will then be called to substitute teach.

- Friday – August 28th– 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM in E111 at LPSDO
- Friday – September 4th - 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM in E111 at LPSDO
- Friday – October 2nd – 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM in E111 at LPSDO
- Friday – December 11th - 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM in E111 at LPSDO
- Friday – January 8th - 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM in E111 at LPSDO
The Lincoln Public Schools District Offices are located at 5901 “O” Street in Lincoln.
Local Substitute Pay Scale
2009-2010
- Full Day $126.97
- Half Day $67.01
