Aug 12, 2015

School started Wednesday at Lincoln Public Schools for the 2015–2016 school year: a clean slate for teachers, students and families – and the entire city and school district vibrated with first-day-of-school momentum.

Moms and dads of kindergarteners grabbed those last hugs and kisses. Parents everywhere took first day photographs. New backpacks and new shoes sparkled. Bike racks were packed.

Lincoln North Star High School band members greeted Goodrich Middle School kids to school. Teachers formed a tunnel walk for the very first students at the new Career Academy opening its doors Wednesday. Kids at Campbell Elementary School created “ripples of hope” while students at Beattie Elementary School met each other through getting-to-know-you Bingo.

Signs were everywhere in elementary schools with hearts and minds focused on the future, like this one at Beattie: “Congratulations. You will graduate from high school in 2026.” Chalk messages filled elementary school sidewalks: “Welcome back.”

A few comments overheard in the district:

From a Park Middle School sixth grader receiving a Chromebook: “I hope I have homework tonight so that I can use my new computer.”
From a Beattie administrator: “When you see us rolling tables down the hallway, that means we have even more students arriving than we anticipated.”
Superintendent Steve Joel, visiting schools throughout the district along with many LPS leaders and members of the Lincoln Board of Education: “We’re starting the first day strong.”

There are some big changes this year:

  • Some teachers start their first year; some start their last
  • Students who are now 'all grown up' have moved up to middle school or high school
  • There were new secured entrances at many schools

And the excitement continued. It is impossible to comprehend all the knowledge that will be consumed by our students this year. But today, we know they will start with the basics: names, routines, lunches and previews of what's to come.

Continue to check in all day long for photos and updates from our schools throughout Lincoln.
